At The Madakkal Ridges, the last few weeks have seen the start of earth excavation, making of internal roads and creation of water bodies as per the designs created by our partners at Ananas.

As a proactive step in our soil conservation efforts, we have recently commenced the excavation of a farm pond with the primary goal of collecting runoff water.

🚧 Connecting to Existing Streams: This pond will be strategically connected to the existing stream through the implementation of Gully Plugs, ensuring a seamless integration with the natural water flow while preventing soil erosion.

Bioswales will be constructed along the roads — these bioswales act as natural filters, promoting water absorption and reducing surface runoff.

For enhancing the soil quality, we will be sowing millets, pulses and oilseeds over the next 3 months. Crop rotation methods will optimize land use and improve soil health by leveraging the unique benefits each crop offers to the soil. Pulses, such as lentils and chickpeas, have been strategically chosen for their ability to fix nitrogen in the soil.

Millets, known for their resilience in diverse climates, are excellent at conserving water. Their deep root systems help in preventing soil erosion and also thrive with minimal water resources.

Sowing oilseeds, such as sunflowers and sesame, aids in maintaining soil structure. These crops enhance soil aeration and drainage, fostering an environment conducive to plant growth.

Starting from the upcoming week, we are initiating the construction of worker sheds for our workforce, along with the development of power and water supply infrastructure. Following which, the commencement of work on a campsite and solar fencing is scheduled.

As part of our design panel, we have welcomed three new architect firms. In the last fortnight, some of them visited the Madakkal farm site to evaluate the topography and other factors, aiding in the design process for the initial batch of member houses and the community center.

Prospective new members continue to actively engage with us. They visit the site, explore our existing farms, meet our team, and connect with both longstanding and recently joined members. An exciting year lies ahead, and we eagerly anticipate its commencement.
